24 May 2011, 10:11 PM
DUBAI — A group of 12 students come together every week on the SAE campus in Dubai Knowledge Village to learn and explore new ways of creating applications on the iPhone. The course, titled ‘iPhone 360’, is growing fast in popularity as tech-savvy youngsters look to make a fortune by making some nifty apps.
Easy as it sounds, the students undergo 16 lessons to learn basic programming and develop their own iPhone application. Amir Jahanlou, one of the trainers of the iPhone course, says the niche industry is gaining prominence in the UAE.
Clad in a blue jeans and a T-shirt, Amir demonstrates the practical applications of maths in programming a mobile application to his group during one of his classes.
“There are a lot of working professionals who come in the evening to learn about the new technology. It is a mixed bag of working professionals. Surprisingly, many people want to learn to make their own apps to help their organisation,” says Amir.
With over 140 million registered users on iTunes, research indicates that an average user spends over 45 minutes with his iPhone. On the SAE’s Dubai campus, over 35 students have already completed the course under Amir’s supervision.
“Everybody in the media industry wants to make their presence felt on the mobile medium. Interactivity and gaming are already popular and the touch platform has made it easier for developers to expand their imagination and venture beyond the conventional ideas.”
Amir is currently working on developing his own game which allows users to click a photograph of them and make a 3D avatar that goes through various levels in the game.
“There are a lot of freelancers who make their own applications and also work with top corporate companies to help them. Some of the students who complete the course are recruited directly and many people can make a really good living if their application strikes a chord with the audience.”
Combining creativity with application, students learning mobile development get exposed to the dynamics of mobile phones as a new career awaits them.
